The Federation of Melaya joined the United Nation on 17 September 1957. On September 16, 1963, its name was changed to Malaysia.

Malaysia plays an active role within the organisation with participation in almost all peace-keeping missions conducted by the organisation such as on the United Nation Operation in the Congo. Malaysia served as a member of the Human Rights Council from 2006–2009 and 2010–2013. In 2017, Malaysia failed in its bid for a seat at the council.alaysia contributed $8 million in 2016 and $8.12 million in 2017 to the United Nations regular budget.
