The influence of the East India Company expand in Malaysia (Tanah Melayu) in the 19th century. British required Cassiterite for the Industrial Revolution to produce tin. British took controlled of Penang, Province Wellesley, Melaka and Singapore) and formed the Straits Settlement (Negeri-negeri Selat). The influence of the East India Company gradually increase and more states were forced to accept their 'protection'. Selangor, Pahang, Sungai Ujong, Rembau, Negeri Sembilan and Jelebu are combined and formed into the Federated Malay States (Negeri-negeri Bersekutu). Later on the East India Company laid their hand in the Northern States such as Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu were formally absorbed into British Melaya and they took over Johor in 1914 and formed the Unfederated Malay States (Negeri-negeri Tidak Bersekutu).
